The Ground Guys

The weather's been horrible for most this winter, but a handful of service brands might say 'bring it on.' That's because tree removal, car repair, airplane de-icing and more are going gangbusters as the polar vortex reigns.

The heavy snowfall that hammered the Northeast this winter has been an unexpected bonanza for franchisor Josh Skolnick.

CEO and founder Skolnick figures Monster Tree Service in December, January and February rose $500,000 from the same time a year ago. The Fort Washington, Pennsylvania-based company has been swamped removing large tree sections off fences, houses, sheds and garages that collapsed from severe loads of snow and ice.

"Everybody's worst nightmare has been our best dream," Skolnick says.

  4. I have a tree that seems to be getting closer to the power lines. The power company has dominion over the power lines. Bearing that in mind, I am not sure who should be cutting back my tree when it becomes necessary.

  8. Tree care services can be down right helpful. There are times where you can have a tree that is too tall for you to take care of without the right equipment and they will do it for you. This way you do not have to risk the danger and it will get done correctly.

  10. There is some major tree service needed in my town. A huge storm came through last night and now there are trees blocking roads and causing all kinds of trouble. Good thing there are plenty of machines and equipment to go around. We usually have to deal with a storm like this a few times a year.

  11. Tree service on the east coast must go like gang busters during a hard winter. In warm humid areas, trees grow rapidly with more brittle branches, and an ice storm can cause all that flimsy wood to come down at once, damaging garages, cluttering streets, and breaking power lines.

  12. I would really like to get a lot of these old trees removed before winter hits. I am hoping to get a landscaping company come next year and I want to prep my yard before that. I have several trees for starters that need to be removed.

  13. Dealing with a tree in the yard can be a headache. My family actually removed a couple of trees without knowing that we were not supposed to. Thankfully the city just gave us the replacement trees and over looked the part where we forgot to ask for permission.

  14. My grandparents have a HUGE willow tree in their backyard. It's sort of dangerous, but they don't want to get rid of it. I wonder if some good pruning would save it and still make it safe.

  15. Wow, tree services can cover a lot of things--not just tree removal! Our yard has a tree that's getting overgrown, and we could use some help. It's a little overwhelming to see such a large, old piece of the landscape take over the yard. We'll have to get it trimmed down soon.

  16. That is a great article. I like the idea of taking advantage of what others may say are bad conditions. That is how we all should think.

  17. Last winter the snow was so bad that it split an old small tree in half. We had to get some help to help us clean up the front and back yard. We actually had to have someone clean up tons of broken branches and torn down trees. Now our front yard looks a little bare than what we are used to.

  20. It is awesome to see capitalism reign supreme. I am happy that these businesses are doing well this year. I know that tree services in my area have also been busy. Early snow fall can take down a tree if it hasn't lost its leaves yet.

  22. Believe it or not, we always see a big spike in service during the winter. It's mostly due to the extra weight trees have to bear when holding all that extra snow and ice. Only certified Brooklyn Tree Service companies should assist though...
